But it is events off the pitch that have dominated in recent weeks with the chief executive resigning, board members stepping down, and players threatening to strike over unpaid wages.

Previous head coach Jonty Gorley stood down with former St Helens forward Amor brought in to help his hometown club.

There was concern over the club being able to fulfil their last few games – they had a squad of only 14 players for the win over Dewsbury Rams last month.

However, Wakefield owner Matt Ellis announced four days before Sunday’s match that all the money from specially priced £10 tickets would go to Whitehaven, while there were collections from Trinity supporters in the crowd of 5,096.

“What Matt Ellis has done for us as a club in our hour of need, he didn’t really have to do that,” said Amor, external.

“He’s been able to generate some ticket money and some donation money that is probably going to help us through to the end of the year.”
