This supermarket has been the cheapest so far this year
One supermarket is proving to be the number one shop for cheap groceries, according to research by Which?.
Each month, consumer research organisation Which? compares the cost of groceries in popular UK stores including Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Aldi, Waitrose and Lidl among more. In February, one store came out the cheapest and that was German supermarket chain Aldi.
Which?’s supermarket research ranks supermarkets by cost after purchasing the same 100 items in each store, using both branded and unbranded popular items. For supermarkets with loyalty schemes such as Tesco Clubcard, Which? creates separate rankings for the cost of the 100 items with and without applying the discount.
In February, Aldi came out at £182.64 for 100 items, closely followed by supermarket rival Lidl (with Lidl plus discount) at £184.51 with a difference of just £1.87. Applying Lidl Plus discount only saved 43p compared to a shop without using the loyalty scheme.
Coming out £19.21 more expensive than cheapest option Aldi was Asda at £201.85 for the same 100 items. Closely behind is Tesco at £205.31 with a Clubcard and £212.54 without applying a discount, which shows that this month, using Tesco’s loyalty scheme saved the shopper £7.53 for the 100 items.
On the steeper side of the spectrum, Waitrose came out as the most expensive supermarket at £245.79 for the same 100 items. This made Waitrose £63.15 more than cheapest supermarket Aldi – for exactly the same items.
And the second most expensive supermarket in February was Ocado at £230.90, £14.89 cheaper than Waitrose and £48.26 more expensive than Aldi.
The order that the supermarkets ranked was exactly the same in February as it was in January.
