LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – After over two hours of lightning delays, UK football opened it’s season against Southern Miss, but they never got to finish the game. Due to the weather, the game was ended after midnight with 9:56 remaining in the third quarter, resulting in a 31-0 Kentucky win.
The University of Kentucky released the following statement:
“By mutual agreement of the participating institutions as permitted by NCAA rules, tonight’s game between Kentucky and Southern Mississippi has been terminated and is considered a complete game with a final score of 31-0 in favor of Kentucky. All statistics in the game are considered final and complete.”
The Wildcats scored just once in the first quarter on a 12-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Brock Vandagriff to junior wide receiver Barion Brown.
In the second quarter, senior kicker Alex Raynor knocked down a 41-yard field goal, followed by a one-yard touchdown rush from senior running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye. Brown added a second touchdown with another 12-yard pass from Vandagriff.
In an attempt to play a full game, the teams did not go to the locker room at the half, opting for just a 10 minute halftime on the sidelines.
In the third, Vandagriff hit junior tight end Jordan Dingle on a five-yard touchdown pass. That would be the final scoring play of the evening.
In his first collegiate start, Vandagriff went 12-18 for 169 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
The Wildcats improve to 1-0 and open conference play at home September 7th against the South Carolina Gamecocks (1-0). Kick off is set for 3:30 P.M.
