Flights to and from Catania in Sicily were suspended again yesterday after Mount Etna erupted again.
Its was the second time this month that Etna disrupted flights at Catania.
In a statement posted on X (Twitter), the airport said it had closed due to the emission of ash. “Passengers are asked to contact the airline for information regarding their flight,” it added.
The airport was fully reopen again by 8pm on Tuesday, but several flights between the UK and cancelled, diverted or severely delayed.
EasyJet’s flight from London was diverted to nearby Palermo and Ryanair’s flight from London was diverted to Trapani on Sicily’s west coast. Jet2’s flight from Manchester to Catania landed more than seven hours late and the return flight was delayed nearly 11 hours, eventually departing just before midnight.
