The UK is brimming with stunning cities, towns and villages, many of which are easy to navigate on foot and have plenty of hidden spots to discover.
However, one particular destination gained one of the top spots on a comprehensive list of the world’s most walkable cities in 2024.
Ranked in the sixth place by investing website Insider Monkey, Edinburgh appears to leave visitors in awe of its beauty.
And it’s no wonder why, as Scotland’s capital boasts a UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town among its top landmarks.
Not only that, but the picturesque and iconic cobbled streets are brimming with medieval architecture and within walking distance of world-famous sites like Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile.
Edinburgh also has beautiful green spaces, such as Princes Street Gardens and the Royal Botanic Garden, perfect for leisurely strolls amidst nature.
And for those interested in cultural studies, major sites, including the National Museum of Scotland, the Scottish Parliament, and numerous galleries, are all conveniently located for easy access.
Travellers have raved about their experience in this magical city, with some even saying it looks “out of a fairy tale”.
Recounting her 2018 visit, Tripadvisor reviewer Anna M shared: “I was expecting an amazing city and Edinburgh didn’t disappoint me at all.
“The weather has been horrible, snow, rain, wind, bony cold…the lot, but even in these bad conditions the city is gloriously beautiful.
“The old city has still the magic atmosphere of Kings, Queens, knights and pheasants. It is so well kept that it is easy to imagine the medieval life amongst its narrow streets and alleys.”
Yomna E added: “One of the beat cities I’ve ever been too! Very relaxing and the people are really nice. Plenty of things to do! Two days are not enough, you need a week. Would definitely come back again!”
The latter reviewer also recommended the Christmas period as one of the best times of the year to visit Edinburgh.
The city is a renowned holiday destination for those who enjoy festive activities, as it hosts a highly-decorated Christmas market that attracts visitors from all across the globe.
