Tributes have been paid to an 11-year-old girl who died after falling from a hotel balcony while on holiday in Spain.
Clodagh Phelan from County Wicklow was staying with her parents and two brothers in Alcúdia, Spain when the tragedy happened.
She was discovered on the roof of a nearby shop after falling from the seventh floor at about 06:30 local time on Monday morning, the day the family were due to return home.
Emergency services were called and attempted to help Clodagh, but she died at the scene.
The Spanish Civil Guard have said they are treating her death as an accident.
Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Simon Harris offered his sympathies to Clodagh’s family and community in the wake of the incident.
“So sad to hear of the tragic loss of Clodagh Phelan,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
“So much promise and personality snatched away in a terrible accident.”
Clodagh’s athletics club Parnell AC Juveniles said it was “truly heartbroken” at her passing.
“Clodagh was a beautiful, spirited child and a great athlete who excelled in many sports, not just athletics,” the club said.
“Her family Valerie, Liam, Will, and David and extended family are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.”
Rathdrum Rugby Club said members were “stunned by the tragic news of the passing of our little star”.
“Clodagh was truly a class apart with an outstanding future ahead of her,” it said.
“A rare talent with a combination of pure athletic capability, skill, sense of team, and as anyone who ever had the privilege to see her play will know well, a singular will to win the battle.
“Above all Clodagh was just a fantastic little person with a massive heart and infectious personality.”
The club added it was devastated by her loss and “stand united, ready to offer solace and support to all who mourn during this deeply sad period”.
