If you’ve got a long flight ahead of you, the last thing you want to be is uncomfortable, tugging at your skirt or adjusting the waistband of the slightly-too-small jeans that look really good but cut into you when you sit down for long periods of time.
That’s why choosing an outfit for the airport can be really stressful – because you want to look chic, stylish, and almost effortless, but you also want to be able to move properly in the clothes and feel comfortable.
But more than this, a travel expert has shared that there’s something you certainly shouldn’t wear when you go to the airport – despite the fact it looks really cute – because it could lead you to a full body search.
Laurie, who posts on TikTok as @travelby_laurie, warned: “Do not wear these in airport security to help you not be delayed.”
First off, she shared that nothing should be “tied around your waist,” and instead, it needs to go into the tray you’re putting through the security scanners.
It can be all too easy to forget things when you’re in the stressful situation of putting everything into a tray to pass through the body scanner at security, so make it easier for yourself by just not putting anything around your waist in the first place.
Also, remember to take additional layers, like jumpers (if you have a T-shirt underneath) and jackets off, so you don’t get asked to go through again. “Just put it in the basket [tray] and wear it on the plane,” she advised.
But there’s one key type of clothing that she says is important to ditch even though it’s pretty – and many agree. Laurie warned: “Do not wear sequins like I did on Christmas Day years ago [because] it could just delay you from getting to your flight.”
In the comments, someone asked: “Why no sequins on a flight?” Well, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), sequins and other “shiny things” may set off security alarms.
Taking to Facebook to warn people ahead of the festive period, and generally, they wrote: “Sequins & beads & shiny threads, oh my! If your holiday sweater has these things, it often alarms our security equipment for additional screening.
“Here’s our #HolidayTravel fashion tip: Dress for comfort instead! We recommend packing those jingle bells sweaters for your trip instead of wearing them to the airport.”
A disgruntled passenger wrote: “I know even a few ‘sparkles’ on jeans or top will set off the alarm!” Another fumed: “With how ridiculous you are about everything, it’s a wonder that wearing clothes is still permitted.”
In the TikTok comments, someone said that jewellery should be taken off as well and “put back on at the other end,” but someone asked: “Do you not have body scanners?” which can differentiate jewellery from dangerous metals.
