A man was left gobsmacked at a particular charge that was added to his bill at a fancy restaurant in Menorca, Spain.

Antonio Barbeito, from Madrid, was holidaying on Menorca and decided to treat himself to a lobster meal.

His bill came to €250 (£214) in total, which included €167 (£143) on the lobster, €14 (£12) for some mussels, and €18 (£15.50) for baby squid.

Antonio was evidently happy to splash out at the eatery, but a tiny €3 (£2.50) charge left him absolutely seething. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent his fury.

“I love national tourism and I almost never leave Spain in order to support our hotel and catering industry,” he wrote, sharing an image of his receipt, “but on a bill of €250, to be charged €3 for extra ice seems to me extremely out of place.”

Antonio added that he did not want to disclose the name of the restaurant – despite people asking him to – as he didn’t want to “bother anyone”, but he hoped the eatery would see his post and recognise the receipt.

Reacting in the comments section, one person wrote: “No problem if it’s on the menu: if it is (extra ice bucket €3) you should have read it before ordering. If it’s not on the menu, it’s illegal. It’s not that difficult.”

Another said: “Prices are not bad…charging you for the ice is…where I work, in Mallorca, you would have paid more for the same thing, but we wouldn’t have charged you for the ice.” A third said: “For the Balearic Islands, I think the prices are quite reasonable.”

Some eagle-eyed X users noticed something else that was odd about his bill, with one commenting to say his decision to pair seafood with Coke Zero was the most surprising thing about it.

A second user joked: “Coke with a lobster? You should have been charged more.”
