This idylic little island has been named the perfect getaway for a peaceful, relaxing holiday. One thing many of us dislike about beach holidays is sharing them with hundreds, or thousands of other tourists.
However, that’s not an issue on the Greek Island of Astypalaia. Even in summer, the serene sandy beaches and crystal clear waters are often overlooked by tourists.
Nicknamed the “butterfly of the Aegean” due to its curious butterfly-like shape when viewed from above, it’s slightly more challenging to reach compared to other Greek Islands, dissuading numerous travellers unnecessarily.
As a result, it boasts a more unhurried pace than popular tourist hotspots like Santorini and Mykonos, which are more accessible.
Local Greeka said: “Life on Astypalaia is rather quiet. Do not expect lots of wild clubs there that play loud music all night long.”
“There is certainly some nightlife in Chora, but you will mostly find seaside coffee shops and traditional taverns.
“The beaches are mostly short and sandy. Some of them are difficult to get to but almost all give you the peace you may need. After all, the whole island gives this vibe of peace and tranquillity.”
The beautiful island boasts the same picturesque whitewashed villages and crystal-clear blue waters as its more famous counterparts – but it’s not overrun with tourists.
Instead, this unique destination offers a different kind of holiday experience. Travel.gr describes Astypalaia as a haven for those seeking relaxation and an alternative to the usual crowded summer hotspots.
The travel company said: “The distance between Astypalaia and the Greek mainland and its wild beauty prevent most people from visiting. So, only those who crave the unusual thrills it has to offer arrive at its port, prepared to experience the island in full on its scenic alleys and bare landscapes.”
Astypalaia offers a variety of holiday experiences. Chora, the island’s capital and port, provides a charming town atmosphere, nestled by the Aegean Sea. Vatses Beach is another highlight, considered one of the country’s most beautiful beaches.
Other gems include Mikres Vatses, a secluded pebbled cove reached only by boat, and Kaminakia, boasting a sandy stretch, deep blue waters, a couple of taverns, and sunbeds with umbrellas.
