In the centre of a UK shopping centre is something bizarre – a £125,000 one-bedroom flat.
The colourful flat was up for sale in the Queensgate Centre, a shopping mall in the town of Grays in Essex. The flat features a large lounge area, a kitchen, a separate dining room, a bedroom and a bathroom right next to it.
It is part of a small group of flats on the top floor of the centre, all of which are of different colours and have lift access and individual mailboxes.
The shopping centre is currently unused but the flat is in the town centre with easy access to local shops, coffee spots and other amenities. It is also close to Grays’ mainline station with links into London and the local area.
The curious flat has taken the internet by storm, with one critic saying the group of flats looked ”dystopian”.
”This is inside a shopping centre – which they have now converted into flats,” said the TiKTok user known as Housing Horrors.
”Everything just feels really fake and weird, it’s almost like watching something out of Squid Game.”
The average price of a one-bedroom flat in Grays sits at around £175,000, but the TikToker felt the property’s £125k price tag was ”extortionate”.
He said: ”I do understand that it’s a one-bedroom flat, but honestly for the location, because it’s in a shopping centre, it just feels so weird.”
He added that buyers would also need to invest a lot of money to renovate the flat as ”everything is a bit dead”.
Hundreds took to the comments to share their thoughts. One said: ”The pastel colours make it seem like an abandoned kids show set.”
Another user agreed, saying: ”It’s giving the same feeling as when you walk around a conservatory showroom.”
Others didn’t see an issue with living inside an old shopping mall. One said: ”At least it shouldn’t be damp because it’s got like 2 roofs and loads of walls.”
Another commented: ”It’s cool, unique and cheap. Needs updating inside but apart from that sounds like a great deal. Better than in old neglected block of flats.”
The flat was put on the market with Bairstow Eves and has been sold subject to contract.
Although some Reddit users who commented on the photo of the scales were positive with one saying "they are 10x more convenient and faster", many were more crit
