A charming city in Greece which combines historical significance, cultural richness and natural beauty has been named the most affordable destination in the country.
Kilkis, a city in northern Greece, is located in the region of Central Macedonia and serves as the capital of the region. It is known for its rich history, cultural heritage and proximity to beautiful natural landscapes.
Travel experts Acropolis Tickets & Tours analysed average costs for holiday essentials, like meals, transport and accommodation – and ranked the destinations from most to least affordable.
The Greek city topped the list of the most affordable destinations in the country, with a total cost of £523($662) for a week.
The mainland city had the lowest median price for a week’s accommodation, at £482 ($610), and the cheapest cost for a three-course meal for two people at a mid-range restaurant, at £15($20).
Magdalena Petrusic, a travel expert from Tours & Tickets, commented on the findings, “Greece isn’t typically seen as a budget-friendly destination, with popular spots like Mykonos and Santorini often drawing visitors despite being the priciest on the list!
“There are so many places on the mainland worth visiting that won’t drain your savings, like Kilkis, which has endless natural beauty, history, and cultural events.”
The affordable city has many things to offer and is steeped in history.
It has been inhabited since ancient times, with archaeological findings suggesting a presence dating back to the Neolithic period. A significant event during the Balkan Wars (1913), the Battle of Kilkis-Lahanas was a decisive Greek victory. The city has a war museum dedicated to this event.
The city hosts cultural festivals, including traditional music and dance events that reflect its rich Macedonian heritage. The local food scene features traditional Greek dishes, with influences from the refugees who settled here during the 20th century.
Kilkis is about 48 km (30 miles) north of Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, making it easily accessible by road. It serves as a gateway to the surrounding villages, nature reserves, and archaeological sites.
