While summer may be behind us in the UK, there are still plenty of holiday destinations just a few hours away that can offer Brits a chance to enjoy the sun.
One lesser-known location that is often overlooked by British tourists is El Jadida, Morocco.
The city is located in the country’s west, on the coast, and just an hour’s drive from the city of Casablanca.
El Jadida was built by the Portuguese and originally named Mazagan back in the 16th century.
UNESCO has listed the city as a World Heritage Site thanks to its “outstanding example of the interchange of influences between European and Moroccan cultures”.
Many who travel to Morrocco opt for Marrakech due to its world-famous markets, but El Jadida also boasts a thriving market with local food and clothing.
You can pay as little as £2 for dishes that come with meat, potatoes and vegetables. Some bars also sell beers for between £3 and £5.
Those who like their history can visit the Mazagan fortress which still has old cannons in place.
Deauville Plage is the main beach in the area, giving visitors a great place to relax.
Flights from London take about three hours and Skyscanner provides flight options from £162 in October.
On Friday, October 4, temperatures in El Jadida reached 25C.
One choice for accommodation is the Mazagan Beach Resort, described by the Evening Standard as a “playground in an undiscovered part of Morocco.”
The resort boasts 500 rooms, 14 restaurants and bars, a spa, its own private beach, three pools, an 18-hole golf course and Morocco’s largest casino.
Those who enjoy sports may also be tempted to stay here as archery, surfing, horse-riding and go-karting are all available.
Rooms here start from £133 per night.
