Benito Juarez International Airport, most commonly known as Aeropuerto Internacional Ciudad de Mexico (AICM) or Mexico City International Airport, is the busiest international airport in the Central American country. 

But it is also considered to be the busiest two-runway airport in the world, as it counts an average of 1,056 daily aircraft movements. 

This massive air hub in Mexico welcomed last year alone more than 48.4 million passengers – up nearly two million when compared to figures from 2022. 

An airport welcoming all Mexican flag carriers, it is located in Mexico City, just minutes from many tourist districts.

The Mexico City International Airport serves flights to and from most major cities in the world, including Amsterdam, Bogotá, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Santiago, London and Los Angeles.  

In addition to that, there are shorter international flights to most Central American capitals departing from here, and domestic flights to almost all Mexican airports with any scheduled service. 

The airport has two terminals at the southwestern end of the airport grounds on opposite sides of its runways.   Inside, there are multiple luxury lounges run by the likes of American Express, HSBC and Lufthansa. 

The significant air traffic at this airport prompted Mexican authorities in 2014 to declare the airspace surrounding it “saturated”. 

That same year, the administration led by the then president of Mexico Peña Nieto proposed the Texcoco Airport project – a planned airport meant to replace the Benito Juárez International Airport.

The Texcoco Airport project, which was meant to become the Nuevo Aeropuerto Internacional de México (NAICM) was tipped to cost an eye-watering $13.3billion (£10.4bn) – however, despite work having begun in 2018, the plan was later scrapped. 

The area, on the outskirts of Mexico City, is now planned to be turned into a national park.
