A charming island known for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and unique culture is a perfect place for British holidaymakers planning to travel to sunny destinations in December. 

Djerba, an island situated off the Tunisian coast, has a Mediterranean climate, characterised by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. 

A fresh route is set to launch from Manchester Airport in November, providing an alternative to well-liked winter-sun spots like the Canary Islands and Cape Verde, while still promising temperatures reaching up to 20C even in December. Starting this month, EasyJet will operate bi-weekly flights to Djerba. 

Return tickets start at £45 per person (though additional fees for seat selection and luggage may apply), making it a super affordable option.

With a flight time of about four hours from the UK, it’s quicker to reach than Cape Verde or destinations like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, while still providing a sun, sea, and sand experience even in winter.

The expansive island features miles of beautiful Mediterranean coastline and has long been a favorite among European tourists, yet it remains relatively undiscovered by British travellers. 

The new route from Manchester is the first to operate from the UK outside of London airports, offering a fresh experience for those in the northwest.

Djerba, located in the Gulf of Gabes, presents a captivating mix of Greek and Arabic influences. Picture pristine white buildings alongside beautiful sandy beaches, contrasted with lively markets and camel rides.

While it’s easy to spend your holiday relaxing on the beach, Djerba has much more to explore, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The capital city is known for its vibrant markets, traditional crafts, and lively atmosphere. Visitors can explore the local shops and enjoy fresh seafood at the harbor.

A visit to the bazaar in Houmt Souk, the largest town on the island, is a must for any traveler. 

Known as one of Tunisia’s finest markets, you can easily spend hours exploring the maze of narrow lanes, browsing stalls that offer tiles, crockery, rugs, fabrics, jewelry, fruits, and spices.

Nearby, Djerbahood has recently gained fame for its stunning street art. This open-air gallery, located just outside Houmt Souk, features murals by international artists throughout the village, with guided tours available to ensure you don’t miss a single piece.

For those who prefer a traditional gallery experience, the Musee de Guellala is worth a visit, showcasing an impressive collection of African art, sculptures, and cultural artifacts.

For a unique beach outing, try a camel ride along Djerba Lagoon. Many local agencies offer guided rides, with early evening providing an ideal time as the sun sets over the water.

Djerba is also home to Borj El Kebir, one of North Africa’s best-preserved medieval castles. Built in the 16th century, it overlooks Houmt Souk’s port and offers breathtaking views of the city and coastline.
