A popular tourist destination in Europe has been slammed as overcrowded and expensive with visitors saying it felt more like Disneyland than a beautiful mediaeval city.
Dubrovnik in Croatia has been described as overpriced and overcrowded on the popular social media site Reddit.
The coastal city is known for its walled Old Town and has seen a resurgence in visitors following the release of Game of Thrones, which filmed many scenes in Dubrovnik.
It is a popular cruise destination and despite a cap on numbers, more than 1,000 passengers often disembark each day.
One visitor wrote: “Beautiful place, but it’s horribly touristy, crowded and filled with cruise passenger tours.
“It’s basically Balkans Disneyworld in all of the worst ways, with whatever Croatian culture that was there long abandoned.”
Another person said: “Croatia is amazing but this city doesn’t represent it well. It’s super expensive and very, very touristy. Even worse when cruise ships roll in. Explore the rest of the country too.”
If you want to visit Croatia but you don’t fancy battling with the crowds of Dubrovnik, then you can visit in the shoulder seasons of autumn and winter – or skip the city entirely and see what else the country has to offer.
The beautiful city of Rastoke is somewhat of a hidden gem in Croatia and is located just two hours drive from the city of Zagreb.
It boasts stunning waterfalls and is the perfect destination for nature lovers – and those who fancy a fairytale getaway.
The captivating scenery of Rastoke has unsurprisingly given rise to numerous myths, many involving fairies believed to have inhabited the area.
The Croatian tourism website reveals that these fairies are thought to have dwelled in the town since “ancient times.”
On their website, they note: “These timid forest creatures have lived in the Rastoke area since ancient times, and are mostly active at night, as they usually avoid people.”
