This African city has been named the best in the world with its 97% of residents saying it makes them happy to live there.
Cape Town, in South Africa, claimed the number one spot in Time Out’s 50 Best Cities in the World for 2025 index.
It earned the coveted top spot thanks to its “beauty, historic sites and cultural hubs”.
Making up the top five cities were Bangkok, New York, Melbourne, and London.
To create the list, Time Out surveyed more than 18,500 city-dwellers who were questioned on life in their city, from food, to nightlife, culture, affordability and the overall feel of the city.
But this wasn’t the only factor in deciding the best city. A panel of 100 experts were also asked to name the most exciting cities in the world “right now.”
Data from these two was combined to form the official list.
Cape Town received high scores in multiple areas with 82% of those living there saying the city is “beautiful” and 97% saying “it makes them happy”.
The city is home to a colony of African penguins, world-class wines, Blue Flag beaches and one of the seven wonders of nature.
It also has a vibrant nightlife and a range of delicious foods to try.
The city is one three capitals of South Africa and one of its most famous attractions is Table Mountain.
The mountain is located in the middle of Cape Town and offers many hikes and incredible views in all directions.
One person on Tripadvisor said: “A wonderful experience to take the Cable Car to the top, and then wander the National Park when you reach the summit.
“The landscape is beautiful, the views of Cape Town are exceptional. It is a must do when in Cape Town. Go early to beat the crowds!”
Grace Beard, Travel Editor at Time Out, said: “Our annual list of Time Out’s Best Cities in the World right now proves that if you want to know what makes a city truly great, ask a local.
“Thousands of city-dwellers worldwide responded to our survey this year.
“This list not only showcases the world’s most exciting cities to visit in 2025, where world-class culture, great food and exciting nightlife can be found on every corner, but also reflects the places where locals feel most at home.”
