KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Protesters gathered outside the Holiday Inn in Tamworth, England, amid a significant police presence. Videos of officers attempting to manage the crowd were shared on social media. This occurred just hours after protesters smashed the windows of the Holiday Inn in Rotherham, a hotel known for housing asylum seekers. Initial reports of protesters causing damage to the hotel have surfaced.
Earlier in the day, an angry mob stormed inside the Holiday Inn in Rotherham and set fire to the building. Videos shared on social media also showed protesters hurling objects at police officers. According to the BBC, at least ten police officers were injured during the violent demonstration at the hotel.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violent anti-immigration protests happening across the UK. The protests erupted after three girls were killed in a knife attack at a children’s dance class in Southport, England, last week.
“I utterly condemn the far-right thuggery we have seen this weekend. Be in no doubt: those who have participated in this violence will face the full force of the law,” he wrote on X.
In a video message, he added, “If you target people because of the colour of their skin or faith, that is far-right and I’m prepared to say so. Our police deserve our support as they tackle any and all violent disorder that flares up. Whatever the apparent cause or motive… we make no distinction: crime is crime, and this government will tackle it.”
Former PM Rishi Sunak also condemned the unrest across the country.
“The shocking scenes we’re seeing on the streets of Britain have nothing to do with the tragedy in Southport. This is violent, criminal behaviour that has no place in our society. The police have our full support to deal with these criminals swiftly and they must face the full weight of the law,” he wrote on X.
