A large police presence was at the UK’s oldest purpose-built mosque in Woking on Monday evening following reports of possible disorder.
Surrey Police’s Woking beat said on Facebook it was made aware of “plans to target the mosque” circulating on social media and officers arrived “within minutes” of the first call being received.
It later added that it had not seen any disorder taking place at Shah Jahan Mosque, or the surrounding area.
It said the response shows it is “continually monitoring the situation” and said its “priority is ensuring that our communities feel safe and supported by us”.
Continuing violent disorder was seen in parts of the country on Monday night, in which police came under attack in Belfast, Darlington and Plymouth.
The government has offered mosques at risk of violent disorder additional security personnel after riots broke out following the Southport attack last week.
Sussex Police has said it is investigating a threat to attack Hastings Mosque on Sunday as a hate crime.
Surrey Police said officers would continue to engage with local communities “who have been feeling vulnerable since we first saw the increase in violent disorder across the country”.
“We recognise that this is a really challenging time for these communities, and we have increased our visibility and engagement where we know that residents, businesses, and faith leaders are feeling vulnerable,” it added.
Shah Jahan Mosque has been contacted for comment.
