New data revealed by Spanish home builder Taylor Wimpey España has unveiled the number one destination where British expats are snapping up property in the country. Nestled in the south of Spain is the autonomous community of Andalusia, home to the famous Costa del Sol.

As you may imagine from the name, the destination is known for its sunny climate, with year-round golden rays.

So, it’s no surprise that British tourists and expats alike are flocking to the region for holidays and even to start a new chapter.

According to the data from Taylor Wimpey España: “Some areas of Spain are perennially popular with British buyers. The Costa del Sol has been a long-term favourite and currently accounts for more than 80 percent of all sales to British buyers, according to Taylor Wimpey España’s April 2024 year-to-date figures.”

Data from the Colegio Registradores reflects this too, showing British buyers accounting for 15.3 percent of all purchases by foreigners in Andalusia in 2023 – more than any other foreign nationality.

The Costa del Sol enjoys a Mediterranean climate which means hot, dry summers and mild weather during the winter.

July and August are the must-visit months for sun-seekers, with temperatures reaching an average maximum of 29C and 30C respectively.

During July and August the region typically experiences zero days of rainfall. By comparison, December and January are the region’s coldest months. But even then you may be surprised by mild temperatures.

In both months, the average high sits at 16C and the average low is just 6C in January and 7C in December. Both months receive an average of five days of rainfall. By comparison, in London there is an expected 12 days of rainfall in January and in Manchester this figure creeps up to 13 days.

The Costa del Sol is also known for the beautiful beaches which stretch along its coastline. According to the most recent Tripadvisor reviews, the best beaches in the Costa del Sol include Burriana Beach, Playa la Carihuela and Playa de La Malagueta.
