Haute couture is on show at ‘Cinecittà si Mostra’, the museum of Rome’s Cinecittà film studios. From December 14, visitors are able to enjoy the atmosphere of a major film set and runway show with the costumes produced by Saint Laurent Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello for Parthenope, the movie by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino that recently hit the milestone of one million tickets sold.
Cinema buffs, movie enthusiasts and interested visitors of all ages will be able to discover the lavish original costumes created by designer Carlo Poggioli and made by the French luxury label, now exhibited at ‘Cinecittà si Mostra’.
Underscoring the strong connection between the label and the movie industry, last year Vaccarello set up Saint Laurent Production, a fully owned subsidiary of Saint Laurent which, in a first for a luxury label, is engaged in producing films. The costumes that the Parisian label has loaned to ‘Cinecittà si Mostra’ are among the first used in a film co-produced by Saint Laurent Productions.
They include the silver dress in embroidered silk georgette worn by Parthenope protagonist Celeste Dalla Porta, the evening gown in black satin with a plunging V neck and lateral slit also worn by Dalla Porta, matched to a brown ribbed faux fur mink coat, and the unforgettable outfit inspired by the divas of Hollywood’s Golden Age worn by Luisa Ranieri as Greta Cool, consisting of a gold lamé jersey cape and a dress with a sweetheart neckline in the same material.
Alongside these iconic outfits, deliberately inspired by historic YSL looks, the exhibition showcases the sensational jewel-dress worn by Dalla Porta in the scene featuring Peppe Lanzetta as the Bishop: a mitre, necklace and gem-encrusted belt designed by Poggioli and inspired by the religious relics of the treasure of San Gennaro, hand-made by Pikkio ,a jewellery producer specialised in the film and theatre industry.
Menswear is featured too, with the timeless white linen suit worn by Gary Oldman, starring in Parthenope as the writer John Cheever. The suit is made by Cesare Attolini, a leading tailor in the finest Neapolitan sartorial tradition, renowned since the 1930s and with silver screen icons like Totò, Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio De Sica and Clarke Gable among its customers.
Like the Beatles before them, a slew of British brands are taking the US by storm with their whimsical dresses and cosy knitwear. The Guardian’s journalism is
