Ryanair was forced to axe numerous flights scheduled this week in response to strike action taking place at several of Italy‘s major airports.

Key hubs such as Bologna, Milan, Rome, and Venice faced considerable disruption on Tuesday, September 24, prompting cancellations.

The strikes were poised to throw a wrench in the travel plans of countless individuals journeying to and from the Mediterranean country and did just that with at least eight flights from the UK to Italy cancelled yesterday alone.

According to Flight Patrol data, Venice Marco Polo Airport and Malpensa International Airport (Milan) were among the worst affected, though Bologna Guglielmo Marconi also had journeys from London Stansted axed.

A spokesperson from Claims.co.uk has shared crucial tips for those potentially impacted by the industrial action: “For those flying to or from Italy in the coming days, it’s important to understand your entitlements if your flight is disrupted.”

Customers who find their flights cancelled, particularly in the context of package holidays, have several remedies at their disposal. Options for affected travellers include claiming a full refund, rerouting to their planned destination, or sometimes obtaining compensation directly from the airline.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that delays or cancellations sparked by air traffic control strikes fall under the category of “extraordinary circumstances,” rendering regular compensation claims invalid.

Customers on package holidays ought to receive prompt notification from their travel providers regarding any cancellations.

Should a flight not be rebookable, resulting in the scrapping of an entire holiday, operators are obligated to provide either an alternative vacation or repay the full amount not just for the flights, but the whole travel package.

“If you’re already at the airport when your flight is cancelled, it’s recommended to contact your travel company immediately to discuss your options,” advised a spokesperson.
