When it comes to visiting cities in the UK we all have ones that we favour than others, right?
Whether you’re more into lively nightlife, quaint streets or a great high street, everyone has their preferences when it comes to city breaks in the UK.
However, new research has found the best and worst cities in the UK.
Instead, of looking at the top of the list, which was led by Liverpool, we thought we would take a look at the place at the other end of the list.
The place itself has harshly been described as “rundown” and a “dump” with it bagging the prize for the worst place to go for a short break in the UK. So where is the worst city for a short break in the UK?
Derby. The English city beat the likes of Leicester and Swansea to claim the not-so-worthy title.
The research, which was conducted by Which? based their rankings on 3,967 members where they had to rate UK cities and towns they had visited for leisure.
Those surveyed would have had to at least stay in the particular place for at least one night since April 2022.
The results were then split into categories of small, medium and large cities. Overall, there were 62 places in total.
Well, according to Which? it ranked “poorly for its food and drink, accommodation, cultural sights and tourist attractions, shopping and ease of getting around – all just two stars.”
Harsh, right?
Despite, the scathing reviews, Derby might surprise you in terms of going for a short break away. Let’s take a look at what there is to do in the city.
There is plenty to see and do in the English city, for instance, Derby Cathedral.
Also known as The Cathedral Church of All Saints, it has the oldest ring of 10 bells in the world. Most of the bells date back to 1678 with the church itself thought to have been built in 943.
Derby Cathedral has a 4.5 rating on Tripadvisor with one person writing: “The cathedral is beautiful but it set the scene for a wonderfully atmospheric concert.”
Another wrote: “Amazing place, long weekend visit and found this gem! A total must-see. Although I am not religious it was amazing to see the architecture and how lovely it is maintained.”
A third commented: “The Moon structure is back in the Cathedral and it is a truly magnificent sight, it is worth taking a few minutes to view it.”
If you’re after a cultural fix then you might want to head to Derby’s Museum of Making and the Derby Art Gallery where you can truly see what the city has on offer.
Meanwhile, if you love to shop then the stylish Sadler Gate is great for you. It is a trendy street full of independent shops and boutiques where you can pretty much expect to buy something that you haven’t come across before.
Despite, being voted badly on the list, Derby has set its sights on becoming the UK’s City of Culture in 2029.
