This beautiful village is just seven miles from a popular Lake District town but is kept somewhat hidden as tourists opt for more popular locations nearby. Seatoller – seven miles from Keswick – is located right at the foot of the Honister Pass that makes it popular amongst hikers looking to explore the incredible scenery.
The path winds up a number of bends spanning 1.5miles to Buttermere – another Cumbria village. Seatoller is surrounded by fells, rich pastureland and ancient deciduous woodland.
Around Seatoller the woodlands – such as Johnny Wood – are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
There are few residents in the area, but tourists can easily visit thanks to the National Trust car park that is open year round.
One tourist who visited said it was “breathtakingly beautiful” on Google reviews, while another said it was a “stunning location”.
The car park serves as a starting point for several walking routes, including the popular Castle Crag and the surrounding high fells of Great End, Glaramara and Great Gable
For those preferring a low level walks you can follow the path along the River Derwent past Rosthwaite and Grange through the Borrowdale valley to the shores of Derwentwater.
It is also a popular place for those starting the ascent of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.
And despite its remote location, Seatoller is still served by buses, with the 78 service running year round and the Honister Rambler running between April and October.
There are two accommodation options in the area, including a three-star guesthouse. Seatoller House is a dog-friendly hotel, also offering dining options for guests.
Glaramara Hotel has been serving guests for 75 years, providing an ideal base for walking holidays. Both hotels have limited bedrooms but positive reviews across Google and TripAdvisor.
For those hoping for a more unique experience, Inside Out Yurts is based on Seatoller Farm and offers outdoor holidays for those wanting to live more off grid.
