RANGERS QUALIFY FOR ROUND OF 16 THANKS TO 2-1 WIN OVER UNION SAINT-GILLOISE
Goals from Nico Raskin and Vaclav Cerny earned Rangers a 2-1 win against Union Saint-Gilloise at Ibrox and thanks to results elsewhere, are into the round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League.
Rangers took the lead after 21 minutes when Raskin popped up at the back post to head home only his second goal for the club following a fantastic cross from captain James Tavernier.
Mohammed Fuseini looked to have equalised for Union Saint-Gilloise when he rounded Jack Butland and had the goal at his mercy but Tavernier was on hand to slide in and block the effort.
Philippe Clement’s side doubled their advantage after 55 minutes, with Cyriel Dessers doing brilliantly down the left-hand side before firing the ball across to Cerny who fired home.
Cerny almost got his second of the match when he unleashed a thunderbolt from distance only for his effort to rattle the post.
Kevin Mac Allister pulled one back late for Union Saint-Gilloise, getting on the end of Charles Vanhoutte’s free-kick to loop a header past Butland.
Rangers though, held on and thanks to results elsewhere in the competition, have qualified directly for the round of 16 without the need of a play-off.
Defeat at the qualifying stages of the Champions League in August had limited Clement's summer transfer budget amid a worsening financial picture off the pitch.
