Mykonos in Greece is famed for its white-houses and beautiful coastal areas which attract more than two million visitors a year.
But Myknonos’ popularity means it is often crowded, not to mention the hefty cost of travelling there.
Those who want a tranquil trip to a similarly picturesque destination might be tempted by La Isleta del Moro, in Almeria, Andalucia.
It has been nicknamed ‘little Mykonos’ as it also has white houses and clear blue seawater.
The small island has just 170 residents, making it a quiet destination for those wanting to avoid the congestion of more popular locations.
The town’s small cottages give the town a classic fishing village atmosphere. Many of the homes are small, and most have front doors painted in blue.
It is also known for its stunning pier, winding streets, and awesome views.
At the edge of the town are two cliffs: Peñón Blanco and Cala de la Isleta.
Aside from relaxing on the beach, tourists can take boat tours, go kayaking, diving, or snorkelling.
Playa Los Escullos, Playa del Embarcadero, and the Cala del Carnaje are among the best beaches on the island.
La Islaleta is a great place for seafood.
Almeria offers a wide range of activities and beautiful towns for those who have time to travel around the city and its surrounding areas.
Posting on TripAdvisor, one user said: “Much underrated Spanish town. It’s a working town with a university, port and airport. While tourism is important isn’t not the whole picture.
“Come here and get away from the internationalism of the Costas. Its links to filmmaking are interesting as is the moorish influence.”
Another said: “Almeria is a beautiful coastal town with a long history as a trading port on the Mediterranean. Since it is a bit outside the typical tourist destinations it is less swamped by “hordes’ of visitors.
“Numerous sights in town and countryside to explore, e.g. castle, cathedral, promenades, parks, markets, etc. It is surrounded by the only “real” desert in Europe!”
