If you’re heading away this festive season and planning on packing your life into a carry-on bag,there are a few items you might not think twice about which could get you in trouble.

Hand luggage liquids generally need to be under 100ml to be allowed through airport security, this includes water bottles, face oils, moisturiser and hand gel.

However, some items that aren’t technically liquids can get you into hot water at security. Fulton Umbrellas have compiled a list of some of the surprising items you can and can’t take with you on your travels. 

The first of these is soft cheese, which if you’re travelling back to the UK from the EU, is part of the 100ml limit.

The same goes for jams, chutneys, sauces and anything sold in liquid like antipasti or olives.

Some countries even have stricter rules when it comes to travelling with food, so always check before you pack.

Another item that should not be packed in your carry on is protein powder.

This is because powders can obstruct x-ray aches and therefore will need to be manually checked by staff. This can be a lengthy process so it’s fastest and safest to just leave it at home – or if you’re really desperate, put it in your checked bag. 

Surprisingly, in the UK there is one item you are allowed to take on that you might not be aware of.

If you’re only taking carry-on luggage with you, but you fancy dabbling in a little arts and crafts on the plane, you are allowed to take a small pair of scissors on board.

The general rule in the UK is that any pair of scissors with a blade shorter than 6cm is acceptable.

For anything bigger, you should check them into your hold luggage instead. Some airlines can have different rules around items with blades, so it’s best to check if you need to take scissors with you.
