Orlando Antigua to Illinois
Orlando Antigua won’t be staying in Lexington, but he’s not following John Calipari to Arkansas, either.
On Thursday, there was a report that Antigua wanted to stay with the Kentucky Wildcats, despite a previous report that he was headed to Arkansas.
Now, Antigua is joining the Illinois Fighting Illini staff, the school announced Sunday.
After coming to Kentucky with Calipari when they were hired from Memphis, Antigua was an assistant in Lexington from 2009-14 before leaving to become the head coach at South Florida in 2014.
The Dominican Republic native would coach the Bulls for two and a half seasons before being fired in January of 2017, partly due to NCAA violations relating to academics that got Oliver Antigua, Orlando’s brother, fired and given a show cause penalty.
Antigua would eventually land at Illinois as an assistant coach from 2017-21 before returning to Kentucky in 2021.
During his time at Kentucky, the Wildcats advanced to four Elite Eights, three Final Fours, and won the 2012 NCAA Championship.
