Standing proud among the Alps is the incredible Matterhorn mountain, straddling the main watershed and the borders of Italy and Switzerland. Previous visitors to the mountain have described it as “majestic” and a travel must-do that “should be on everyone’s bucket list”.
You might recognise the Matterhorn as the mountain famously featured on Toblerone chocolate bars until 2023 when the decision was made to re-brand.
However, the mountain remains one of the most picturesque in the world. Having visited the Matterhorn from the US in 2023, a couple left a review on Tripadvisor stating: “Lifelong wish come true to see this in person! It’s viewable from town on a clear day but the peak is usually “attached” to a cloud. No worries because it adds character to the photos!
“We took the train up to the Gornergrat and hiked down past the lakes. There [are] so many different beautiful photo opportunities on the at down. Hopefully, you can take a photo of this majestic mountain yourself.” [SIC]
Another visitor from South Africa added: “A trip to the summit of the Matterhorn should be on everyone’s bucket list.”
The mountain is known for its near-symmetric pyramidal peak with the summit reaching 4,478 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe. The Matterhorn’s four steep faces which rise up above the surrounding glaciers are divided by four names – the Hörnli, Furggen, Leone/Lion, and Zmutt ridges.
Nearby Zermatt town offers views of the mountain on a clear day, or head to one of the cablecars which rise up out of the town.
The Matterhorn Gondola offers views of the mountain peak among the surrounding glaciers, and even goes beyond the border of Switzerland into Italy.
The cable car between the Klein Matterhorn in Zermatt, Switzerland, and the Testa Grigia in Italy allows visitors to cross the Alps from Switzerland to Italy or in the other direction.
According to experts from earthtrekkers.com, the best time to visit the Matterhorn is in the morning as the “weather is generally clear in the morning. Clouds tend to move in later in the day.”
