The Olympics delivered a first full day of action at Paris 2024 and day two promises plenty more thrills and spills.
Simone Biles made her highly-anticipated return in the women’s gymnastics after experiencing ‘the twisties’ at the Tokyo Games, delivering a stunning and historic routine in qualifying while also sparking injury concerns after she was seen limping and wearing strapping on her left leg.
Later, it could be a historic day in the pool, with Adam Peaty cruising into the final of the men’s 100m breaststroke in his bid to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals. French phenom Leon Marchand is safely through in the men’s 400m IM, with Team GB’s Max Litchfield qualifying in second at La Defense Arena.
Elsewhere, Andy Murray could play the final match of his career alongside Dan Evans in the men’s doubles, while Rafael Nadal set up a sensational match with Novak Djokovic in the singles. USA’s basketball team, including LeBron James, also get their title defence underway.
But the water quality of the Seine continues to cause havoc for the triathlon, with practice scrapped on Sunday due to pollution after heavy rain in the city. Follow all the action, latest results and medals from Paris 2024 in our live blog below:
Olympics 2024: Rafael Nadal soaks in the winning feeling in Paris
Wonderful scenes on Chatrier as Nadal soaks in the winning feeling for one more time.
Will it be the last? Djokovic in the second round a tough, tough draw but what an occasion for him, the sport and these Olympics.
And an incredible plot-point in Djokovic’s bid to finally win an Olympic gold. Sensational.
Here’s Nadal’s quick reaction: “It was good for me in the first set, I played well especially with the forehand. Of course, in the second set he played better. He had more rythym and I got less confident. From 2-1, 0-40 (saving three break points) I played really well.”

Olympics 2024: Rafael Nadal through to the second round!
Rafael Nadal marches on at the Olympics, as he gets back to winning ways in the singles at Roland Garros! That third set was a real battle, but he beats Marton Fucsovics 6-1 4-6 6-4 to reach the second round and set up a clash with none other than Novak Djokovic.
How great it is to see the 38-year-old triumph again on the Paris clay, two years after his last victory on his fortress of Court Philippe-Chatrier. An incredible comeback for the Spaniard, and how about what comes next. Nadal vs Djokovic for the 60th time.
But my word that was tense, a real battle out there in the Paris sun. Nadal wins on his third match point, after a nervy double-fault on the second! He stretches out his arms after sealing the win! Superb!

Olympics 2024: Nadal and Fucsovics battling in third set
And now Nadal is springing around the back of the court as if there’s youth in those legs! The 38-year-old pounces on double fualt from Fucsovics and rips the forehand winner up the line to set up break point, where he is this time able to take his opportunity.
Nadal breaks to lead 3-2 in the decider.

Olympics 2024: Nadal and Fucsovics battling in third set
A huge roar from Nadal as the Spaniard saves three break points from 0-40 to stay on serve in this final set. Nadal, who had two break points of his own in the previous game, then outlasts Fucsovics in a nervy rally, finding the line with the backhand crosscourt. Nadal then takes the game with a thumping forehand winner!
This is really close, and it would be a huge upset if Fucsovics could win this. Nadal has only lost four times in his 19-year career at Roland Garros, with all of those matches taking place at the French Open and over best-of-five. The shorter format makes upsets more likely, but facing Nadal on the clay remains a fearsome task.

Evie Richards ‘super happy’ after finishing fifth in women’s Olympics mountain bike race
Evie Richards battled her way to fifth in the Olympics women’s mountain bike race as French favourite Pauline Ferrand-Prevot romped to a dominant gold.
Richards, the 2021 world champion, came strong towards the end of the 31km race – seven laps of a largely gravel circuit around Elancourt Hill southwest of Paris city centre – to finish 25 seconds off the podium places.
It was two spots better than the 27-year-old managed in Tokyo three years ago, and all the more special given she has fought back from a concussion suffered in April in order to be at Paris 2024.

Olympics 2024: Nadal heading for third set
Safe to say this wasn’t in the script, but Marton Fucsovics played extremely well in the second set and the Hungarian has earned his place in the decider. Nadal, who had managed to break back, then conceded the set with a double fault. The air is starting to cool a little now in Paris and Nadal faces a battle to get through to the second round and set up a clash with Novak Djokovic.
That means there’s only one more match before Murray is in action, which is between home favourite Gael Monfils and Wimbledon semi-finalist Lorenzo Musetti. That’s now underway.

Olympics 2024: Nadal breaks back in second set
Nadal breaks back with Fucsovics serving for the second set! Extraodinary from the Spaniard, and brilliant from both players in a stunning rally on 15-15. Nadal was somehow able to retrieve a forehand around the net-post from Fucsovics, who buckled over in disbelief at not winning the point. Both players got a standing ovation but Nadal chose his moment to strike, winning the next two points to get back in serve in the second set.

Olympics 2024 – Boulter loses in Paris first round
Jessica Pegula has come through her match so she’ll now face Elina Svitolina in the second round. USA’s Pegula beat Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in straight sets, 6-3 6-4.
It’s bad news for Team GB however, with Katie Boulter exiting the women’s singles. She has been beaten 6-2 6-4 by Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia on court 11, a disappointing result for the Brit.
Still ahead in the women’s singles today, Coco Gauff will face Alja Tomljanovic and there’s a meeting on court 14 to look forward to between Leylah Fernandez and Karolina Muchova.

Olympics 2024: Nadal still behind in second set
The party atmosphere has fallen a little flat in Court Philippe-Chatrier, as Nadal faces a proper battle to get back into this second set. Fucsovics strikes ahead to lead 4-2 in the second set, holding off a charging Nadal who got back to deuce behind an excellent drop shot and pass down the line.
Could we be heading for a third set?

Olympics 2024: Nadal broken in start of second set
A bit of an untidy game from Nadal, who spurns the chance to win game point before he is broken by Fucsovics at the start of the second set. It’s an early set-back for the Spaniard to overcome.
