Architect, author, photographer and golf course enthusiast Sam Cooper has turned his travels around the coast of Great Britain into a stunning series of journals.
Eighteen volumes of the publication, Links From The Road, review 225 links golf courses and will be released on a quarterly basis, starting from Volume 1 on October 16.
Each volume of the series includes essays on a dozen courses, taking the reader on a journey around the British coast, starting and finishing at the author’s home on the Wirral. The reviews are complemented with bespoke course photography as well as unique illustrations.
“It’s a mixture of history, architecture, photography, and unadulterated geekery,” says Cooper, who works for golf course design firm Clayton, DeVries & Pont, and came up with the idea during the first pandemic lockdown in 2002. When UK travel was allowed he bought a camper van and together with his wife and two dogs set out on an obsessive quest to play every links course in Great Britain. “This is my passion project, and I hope golf fans will join me for the full adventure.”
Cooper’s blog and social media channels struck a chord with all true golfers who have dreamed of doing something similar. Now, Links From The Road will chart his travels for posterity in the form of a series of 18 beautifully crafted magazines that include detailed features and pictures of every one of the 225 links that he has encountered.
Published by magazine specialists 18Players, each volume takes a dozen or so courses and offers a deep dive. Every review includes Cooper’s own photography, while illustrations provide a further level of detail.
Cooper also muses on golf course architecture, details his favourite holes on each leg of the trip and also offers recommendations on places to eat, drink and stay along the way.
Volume 1 of ‘Links from the Road’ will be released on October 16, and costs £17.
