Matthew Mott has stepped down as England’s white-ball head coach.
Marcus Trescothick is in charge while the search for a permanent replacement gets under way.
The managing director of England‘s men’s cricket, Rob Key, decided a “new direction” was needed for the team.
Although Mott’s two-year reign is at an end, captain Jos Buttler has been backed to retain the captaincy.
England won the T20 World Cup in 2022, within months of Mott and Buttler working together.
But the last two tournaments have been disappointing for the side, losing six of their nine games in India last year and suffering a thrashing in the semi-finals of last month’s T20 World Cup.
Among the names in the frame to succeed Mott is former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara.
Names in the frame
He has worked closely with Buttler as head coach of Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.
Other names linked to the role include Australia’s Mike Hussey, Jonathan Trott and Simon Katich.
Eoin Morgan, Buttler’s predecessor, has ruled himself out.
“After three World Cup cycles in a short space of time, I now feel the team needs a new direction to prepare for the challenges ahead,” Key said.
“This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the right time for the team’s future success.
“With our focus shifting towards the Champions Trophy early next year and the next cycle of white-ball competition, it is crucial that we ensure the team is focused and prepared.”
Mott pride
Key thanked Mott for what he had done for the team and said he could “be proud of his achievements”.

Mott said he was “immensely proud to have coached” the England men’s team and said he was leaving the role with “many great friendships and incredible memories”.
“Finally, I would like to thank the England fans, who have always backed us and given us fantastic support wherever we have travelled around the world,” he said.
