The Kentucky Wildcats faced an uphill battle against the Tennessee Volunteers, missing starting point guard Lamont Butler and dealing with a limited Andrew Carr, who has been nursing a back injury.
Thankfully, Kentucky got the W, beating the Vols 78-73. While it was a tremendous win, it’s still imperative that the Cats get Butler and Carr both back and healthy ASAP.
Butler was ruled out ahead of Monday night’s matchup, while Carr remained a game-time decision. Though he suited up, Carr saw only two minutes of action before head coach Mark Pope decided to keep him on the bench, recognizing he wasn’t at full strength.
After the game, Pope addressed the injuries, providing updates on both players.
“There’s multiple factors (in his injury),” Pope said of Butler while later adding, “If and when we get him back, we’re going to be elated.”
For what it’s worth, Butler said he’ll be back soon during Brandon Garrison’s Instagram Live stream, so at least it sounds like he’ll play again in the somewhat near future.
When asked about Carr, Pope didn’t have much of an update but did say the senior big man made it through the game without a setback, so that’s good news.
Now, the Wildcats turn their attention to Saturday’s matchup against Arkansas, potentially without both Butler and Carr. Their recoveries will be crucial for Kentucky’s success, both in SEC play and as the postseason approaches.
Butler, averaging 13.2 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game, has been a key leader in the backcourt, while Carr has contributed 10.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.
With both sidelined or limited, Kentucky will need others to step up, but their returns remain vital for the team’s long-term aspirations.
