Mark Pope has landed transfer number two. San Diego State’s Lamont Butler committed to Kentucky on Friday after Pope and a couple of assistants made a trip to Las Vegas to meet Butler in person. By the end of the day, Butler was a ‘Cat.
Like former Drexel forward Amari Williams — Pope’s first transfer portal commit — Butler is a defensive-minded hoss. The 6-foot-2 guard was named Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year this past season by the coaches and also won the award in 2023 from the media. He’s a three-time MWC All-Defense Team member.
Pope and his staff did an excellent job of keeping this one under wraps.
Butler spent all four seasons at San Diego State before entering the portal. In 2023-24, he averaged 9.3 points, three assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals in 27.5 minutes per game. Butler started all 37 of his games played while shooting 42.1 percent from the field, 30.2 percent from deep, and 59.4 percent from the line. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.
You might remember Butler best from his game-winning, buzzer-beating shot in the 2023 Final Four against Florida Atlantic. Pope will expect that same kind of big-shot-making on offense coupled with his stout defense on the other end. Kentucky got a good one here, BBN.
Another significant defensive piece for Mark Pope going into year one. Along with Williams, UK has five conference Defensive Player of the Year awards between them.
A trip to Las Vegas from Pope and Co. sealed the deal.
One year of eligibility remains for the point guard.
