One lesser-known destination in southern Italy has been praised for its historical importance and is ideal to explore on foot while discovering what makes it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Located on Sicily’s southeast coast, Syracuse is not only great for basking in the sunshine, but also a great Valentine’s Day getaway described as “walking through the pages of a love letter”.
Sharing her top holiday spots, Heather Green – expert at Italian travel operator Citalia – highlighted Syracuse for its romantic ambiance.
She said: “As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Syracuse is like walking through the pages of a love letter to ancient Greece and Rome, with the narrow streets of Ortygia Island, the historic heart of the city, with its cosy cafés, romantic piazzas, and sweeping sea views around every corner.”
Heather emphasised: “The city’s rich cultural heritage is evident in its historic centre, where you can explore archaeological sites, ancient temples, and beautifully preserved monuments, including the awe-inspiring Teatro Greco and the mysterious Ear of Dionysius.”
The travel expert added: “For couples passionate about history, Syracuse offers an immersive journey through Italy’s classical past.”
Syracuse was once one of the most powerful and influential cities in the ancient Greek world. Founded in the 8th century BC, it became a major hub for trade, culture, and political power, rivalling Athens.
The city was home to great minds like the mathematician and engineer Archimedes, whose work has had a lasting impact on science.
The history of this important enclave can be uncovered on one of the walking tours that take tourists back in time to explore ruins like the Valley of the Temples and the Greek Theatre.
Tripadvisor reviewer Michael S highlighted: “Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian) was founded by Greeks about 2800 years ago, and it’s swimming in history.
“There is a magnificent Greek theatre that’s preserved well enough so that there are summer performances of ancient Greek plays, and the theatre is part of an interesting archeological park.
“Sicily was more important economically and politically in the Middle Ages and during the Baroque era than it is today, and you get insight into all of that in Syracuse.”
Travelling to Syracuse is especially tempting in winter when the urge to flee the cold intensifies; the weather from December to February is warmingly “mild”, according to Climates to Travel.
With return flights from London going for as cheap as £49 in the months of February and March, securing a last-minute break in Syracuse is a no-brainer.
Syracuse is about two hours’ drive south of the ferry landing in Messina, and about 45 minutes’ drive from Catania Airport.
