Bosses at a 24-hour gym in a town’s leisure park have announced its sudden closure today.
Anytime Fitness at the St James development in Dover has officially shut its doors for the final time.
In a statement online, the team from the gym said: “This announcement comes as a shock to us, and we’re sure it will for our amazing members, past and present. As of today, Anytime Fitness Dover has officially closed its doors.”
Work started on the £53 million St James development in 2016, opening in 2018.
At the time, Anytime Fitness signed a 15-year lease on a two-storey unit, which totalled 5,770 sq ft.
It is also home to Cineworld, Burger King and a M&S Food Hall.
In today’s statement, Anytime Fitness bosses praised members for their commitment and inspiration.
It added: “Thank you for being the heartbeat of this gym.
“Your determination, passion, and fitness journeys have inspired us every single day. Please, don’t let this closure stop you from continuing to chase your goals.
“We’ve been honoured to witness so many life-changing transformations and personal victories within these walls.
“Together, we’ve created unforgettable memories and lasting friendships.
“While this chapter is ending, we hope the spirit of Anytime Fitness Dover stays with you as you continue your journey toward health and happiness.”
Its departure is one of many changes at the St James retail park.
Sussex Beds left the business park earlier this year, and Costa is planning to leave its current unit, next to Anytime Fitness, this week and move into the nearby former Rico Sabor restaurant.
A new McDonald’s drive-thru is also planned on land opposite the retail park, off Townwall Street.
In other parts of Dover, 24-hour PureGym opened in 2023, filling an empty unit in Granville Street.
The plans were given the green light in 2022 despite a number of concerns from residents over noise, parking and anti-social behaviour.
Anytime Fitness also has branches in Ashford and Chatham.
