Everton and Liverpool release joint statement ahead of Saturday’s Merseyside derby amid red alert from Met Office

Storm Darragh is bringing 90mph winds and the risk of flooding to the UK, with a number of football matches being postponed this weekend after the Met Office issued a red warning.

The Welsh FA have postponed all matches set to take place on Saturday 7 December, stating “it is not safe to drive in such weather”.

There has also been speculation around whether Saturday’s Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool will go ahead.

Both clubs released a joint statement on Friday afternoon, telling supporters to “allow extra time for travel and remain alert to Met Office weather warnings”.

“An amber severe wind warning has been issued by the Met Office for Merseyside from 1am GMT on Saturday, with wind gusts of 60mph to 70mph likely,” their statement added.

“The warning for wind is expected to remain in place until 6am on Sunday.

“Given the weather warning, fans are advised to allow extra time for their journey and take extra care.

“Supporters are also advised to keep a close eye on travel and weather guidance in their area to assist with travel planning for the Premier League fixture [12.30pm kick-off].”

As it stands, Everton vs Liverpool – set to be the final derby at Goodison Park – and all other Premier League matches scheduled for Saturday will be taking place as planned, but there has been disruption elsewhere to the football calendar.
