Architects have revealed what fans can expect to see at the largest football stadium in the world.

The Grand Stade Hassan II stadium in Morocco is hoping to stage the final of the 2030 World Cup. The North African country is co-hosting the World Cup games alongside Spain and Portugal. The 2030 World Cup games will mark the FIFA World Cup’s centenary.

World-famous architects Oualolou + Choi and Populous have released images of the stadium’s incredible design, with a planned record-breaking capacity of 115,000.

The stadium will be built on a 100-hectare (roughly 247 acres) site in El Mansouria, a town just north of Casablanca. The design of the stadium will pay homage to Moroccan culture, with a ‘moussem-style’ design – a type of traditional Moroccan communal tent.

The stadium, which will also serve as the home of two local clubs, will be surrounded by tiered gardens.

It is expected to become the biggest football stadium in the world.

The current holder of that title would be a surprise to many football fans – the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea.

Opened in 1989, the North Korean stadium has an official capacity of 150,000, although recent renovations suggest the venue seats 114,000 fans.

The expected capacity of Grand Stade Hassan II will surpass the North Korean landmark by just 1,000 more seats.

Cricket claims the largest stadium of all sports, with the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India, which expanded to its massive 132,000 capacity in 2021.

Tarik Oualalou, Design Principal and founding partner at Oualalou + Choi and Lead Architect for the project, added: “The Grand Stade Hassan II is deeply rooted in Moroccan culture, with its traditions and contemporary expressions.

“It is rooted in ancient and primordial figures: the Moussem, the tent, and the garden, as well as the topography and landscapes of Morocco. It’s a generous space, open to the world and respectful to the Nature it protects.

“The Grand Stade Hassan II de Casablanca is the embodiment of the great tradition of Moroccan hospitality.”

Populous is no stranger to building large sporting structures: it was behind the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Emirates Stadium in London.

They were also brought in by Manchester United to carry out a feasibility study on a new or refurbished Old Trafford stadium.
