This couple have successfully made travelling their full time job and they even got married in the UK after deciding it’s one of their favourite places.
Megan and Andrew Johnston originally started off in a long distance relationship but after flying to see each other. Andrew was living in Orlando, Florida and Megan was living in Lexington, Kentucky so travelling to each other meant a two hour flight or 13 hour drive. Instead, they began to take trips to new places.
Since then, the couple have left the standard 9-5 life and say they would never be able to make a return.
Andrew said: “We were just flying back and forth to each other at the start of our relationship and we decided that each weekend, we’d go on these little adventures and just try to do as much as possible in those couple of days.
“We kept these trips going, but we just started looking at international trips as well – neither of us had ever left the country.”
The couple took their first ever trip outside of America to Mexico and were excited to see what life outside the states looked like – it prompted them to explore more places. That’s when they first began to work remotely.
Megan said: “We made the decision then that we would put our lifestyle first and then find work that works around it. We both own our own businesses now.”
Andrew said that being made redundant from his job was the catalyst that sparked the major lifestyle change.
After starting a travel blog in 2016, the couple began to network with other travel content creators to understand more about making the lifestyle work.
Having travelled to many countries, Megan and Andrew say that the UK is one of their favourites, especially Scotland. In 2023, the couple decided to get married in Edinburgh after visiting Scotland and loving it so much.
Megan said: “Our first trip to the UK was in 2018 and we just fell in love with it. Andrew has ancestral roots from Scotland, so that was why he really wanted to visit and we just fell completely in love with it.
“We drove into the Highlands and just as we got into Glencoe, we got out of the car and we just thought it was so beautiful.”
They say the best thing about the UK is the short flight times to other places in Europe.
Megan said: “We are always drawn back to the UK, there is just something so sweet about it. I think there’s so many hidden gems there that we just keep finding every time we go there.
“There’s so many spots that we’ve just been looking at thinking this doesn’t even look like what you would expect to find here. I really, really love that.”
The couple shared a story showing how well connected the UK is to Europe and easy opportunities to travel.
Andrew said: “There was one night when Megan was craving a waffle so after she went to bed I just got online and looked up tickets to Belgium. I found £26 flights, so the next morning I woke her up and I’d already got a backpack together and I told her we were going. We went to the airport and then before we knew it we were in Brussels and by the afternoon she was eating a waffle in a country where the waffle was more expensive than the flight.”
Megan and Andrew plan to continue their travels and explore more parts of the world while continuing their online content creation for their brand, Indefinite Travel.
