Greece is a top destination choice when it comes to booking a holiday during the summer for obvious reasons.
The gorgeous country is full of a number of beaches to soak up the sun and incredible islands to explore. However, Greek tourism officials are working to promote a different kind of holiday experience from the Mediterranean country.
Overtourism, is an issue that has been getting worse and Greece hasn’t been excempt from its impacts.
Santorini, Mykonos and Crete are just some of the places that are a part of the country and have seen a boom in visitors jetting over there due to cheaper flights and online travel trends.
So, to manage overtourism, the officials are directing tourists to visit the country during the wintertime instead.
Greece doesn’t only have landscapes that dazzle during the summer but from the slopes of Mount Parnassos to the beautiful ski village of Kalavryta, it has a number of spots that make it a great winter destination.
With over 20 ski resorts, Greece is set to make the country an alternative to other popular European locations such as the Alps, by investing in the expansion of ski facilities to attract both domestic and international visitors.
And the work has already begun.
Greece has launched marketing campaigns, promoting its ski resorts, mountain villages, and winter activites to highlight the diverse experiences the country has to offer.
Whether its skiing and snowboarding you want to enjoy or some delicious Mediterranean food by a fireplace, Greece appears to offer a chance for both and more.
With overtourism being the forefront of the push to market Greece as a year-round destination, the country also plans to add other measures to deal with the issue.
Popular islands, Mykonos and Santorini have introduced a €20 (£16.83) fee for cruise passengers who visit the islands for a few hours before returning to the ship.
It is set to come into play between April and October this year, when the islands are busiests so booking a Greece trip for the winter might just be more worth it.
