The Foreign Office has issued a fresh travel warning for those planning to visit Mozambique, a country in southeast Africa.
In an updated advice issued on Friday, the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) warned that there is a high threat of terrorist attacks globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets.
The FCDO explained that the terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Mozambique.
It stated: “Due to the presence of groups with links to Islamist extremism, there is a threat of kidnap in Mozambique. The threat is particularly acute in northern districts of Cabo Delgado Province.
“British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travellers. If you are kidnapped, the reason for your presence is unlikely to protect you or secure your safe release.
“If you work in Mozambique, you should follow your employer’s security guidelines. Employers are strongly advised to take professional security advice, be vigilant at all times and review security measures regularly. Keep others informed of your travel plans and vary your routines.
“Make sure your accommodation is secure and consider pre-deployment training or travelling under close protection, particularly if working in Cabo Delgado.”
Mozambique has experienced considerable unrest in recent months following the national elections in October 2024. While the situation has stabilised since late December, the risk of sporadic unrest remains. Road toll gates are especially susceptible to sudden protests.
Travellers have been advised to avoid large gatherings or demonstrations and avoid travelling after dark if possible.
It continued: “Protests can be violent and occur at short notice. Avoid large gatherings or demonstrations, pay attention to your surroundings and avoid travelling after dark if possible.
“Access to land borders could be affected, along with public services and transport. If you are in Mozambique, seek local advice and monitor the local media.”
