Much as we might dream of having wardrobes filled solely with designer gems, the reality of even the most enviable, well-curated collections is more of a high-low mix. It’s all about shopping smart, knowing where it’s worth spending, splurging and saving – and dedicating a good amount of time to trawling the high-street for undiscovered treasures, too.
Luckily, we’ve done hard work for you, and are here to give you the inside track on all our most fabulous finds. Introducing the fashion set’s latest, surprisingly affordable obsession: M&S suede loafers.

Owned and proudly worn by half the ELLE UK office – including our notoriously discerning Editor-In-Chief, Kenya Hunt, and Fashion Director, Avril Mair – they are classic, comfy, versatile, bang on trend, and look far more expensive than they actually are. Retailing for the irresistible price of £55, it’s little wonder they’ve gone viral, and have already completely sold out in the chocolate-brown shade.
Word on the street, however, is that we’ll be treated to a re-stock of M&S’ suede loafers soon – and in the meantime, there are still a few sizes available online in the chic taupe colourway that we’re snapping up, stat.
‘It’s rare that such an affordable shoe causes mass hysteria at ELLE HQ, but these loafers have really become a cult item for the team,’ says Deputy Editor Lena De Casparis, who, impatient to get in on the action, managed to track down a pair via Vinted.
‘Not only is the shade of brown suede the perfect neutral to go with any look, but the ruching around the toe gives an instant update on the classic style. Plus they are the comfiest shoes I own, they feel like a slipper! I’ve been wearing mine relaxed with wide leg denim and to the office with oversized tailored trousers, but I cant wait for spring to pair them with a sock and a midi kilt.’
Beyond M&S’ viral pair, it’s clear that brown suede loafers are here to stay, and will act as the foundation for many a cool girl, preppy-polished look this season and in the months to come. So, we’ve found the best alternatives to shop now, from luxury and high-street brands alike.
