The weather is cooling down in the UK and the days are getting darker, but over in Europe, there’s one idyllic island where the temperature stays warm well into October.
The Greek paradise of Crete is the perfect place if you’re missing the summer sunshine.
With most days having a 68 per cent chance of sunshine and an average high of 23C, Crete’s beaches await and the sea is warm enough for a refreshing dip.
Crete has four major cities – Heraklion, Chania, Rethymo and Lasithi.
The best beaches are in Chania, whereas Heraklion offers a more urban experience.
One of Chania’s most interesting beaches can be found to the northwest. Named Seitan Limania, which translates to Satan’s Harbour, this stunning rocky cove is not for the faint of heart.
Located down a steep road, and then a rocky climb down to the beach, this gorgeous cove is worth the effort.
There’s crystal clear water and plenty of spots for rock jumping if you’re feeling bold. You’ll encounter goats wandering the beach that are always happy for a pat or snack – just keep an eye on your picnic as they will definitely try to eat it.
If you’re heading to the beach make sure you have good shoes as the climb down can be treacherous in jandals.
Tripadvisor gives the beach a four and a half stars with tourists saying it offers a beautiful and unique opportunity.
“Unique and beautiful small beach at the bottom of a steep hill and surrounded by rocky hillside,” wrote one person.
“Crystal clear water awaits if you are able to make the climb down to the beach. There are no amenities, so take own drinks and food.”
“Excellent beach hidden with wild goats!!” said another. “There are no bathroom or food services but an amazing experience! I’d go there again!!”
If you are planning a trip and want to see as much of the island as possible, then hiring a car is your best bet. A vehicle gives you the freedom to day trip around and see some of the best Crete has to offer.
As autumn isn’t the most popular time to visit, crowds will have slimmed down so you can take your time without hundreds of other tourists on the roads.
Driving in Crete is simple, but keep in mind that it’s courteous to drive close to the shoulder on rural roads so other cars can pass you. Don’t panic if you see a car coming up behind you, just tuck into the shoulder and let them pass.
