Euro 2024: Spain’s Dani Olmo looks ahead to the final against England
Both teams have reached Sunday’s Euro 2024 final on merit, but England and Spain’s paths to Berlin could not have been more different.
Both are yet to lose a match but Spain have won all of theirs outright, including wins against three ‘big’ teams in France, Italy and Germany.
England drew against Denmark and Slovenia, needed extra time to beat Slovakia in the last 16 and penalties to overcome Switzerland.
But could England’s turbulent route help them, with the mental edge of knowing they’ve already overcome plenty of adversity?
The numbers are in Spain’s favour, though. The past six finals of the World Cup or Euros have been won by the team who played the first semi-final, leaving England needing to buck the trend to be champions.
Data experts Nielsen’s Gracenote said Spain were clear favourites, with a 62% chance of winning.
“England’s 38% chance makes them clear underdogs and they will be seeking to follow Czechoslovakia (1976), Denmark (1992), Greece (2004) and Portugal (2016) in becoming European champions by beating the favourites in the final,” said Simon Gleave, head of analysis.
