The Turkish port town of Ayvalık is often overlooked by tourists, but it has hidden depths that many are unaware of. A few streets back from the waterfront is a stunning village.
This alternative holiday destination offers a huge amount. It’s a town where tradition meets the classic beach vibe, basking in the warmth of the North Aegean Sea. You can even see the Greek island of Lesbos from its coastline.
Many of the old stone houses have been converted into boutique hotels while the Greek Orthodox churches have been turned into mosques. This town has a unique charm like no other.
There are several historic churches within the town, another prominent one being the Ayios Yannis Church. This Greek Orthodox church includes amazing frescoes and offers a cultural insight into the town’s multicultural history.
The town is often referred to as the “olive oil capital of Turkey,” and is renowned for its top-notch olive oil production. You’ll be able to sample some of the finest oils the world can offer, with plenty of opportunity to learn about traditional production methods. There are many olive groves dotted around that are open to the public.
Swimming in the Aegean Sea is a complete luxury. Its waters are crystal clear and warm, and there’s plenty of space to enjoy all sorts of water sports.
One particularly attractive beach is Sarımsaklı Beach, which boasts golden sand and shallow, clear waters, making it an ideal spot for families and sunbathers.
There are beach chairs and umbrellas to rent, or you can take a relaxing walk along the promenade. Afterwards, there are plenty of buzzy restaurants and cafes to visit.
There are also plenty of islands to visit nearby. You can embark on a boat tour to the Ayvalık Islands – both Cunda (Alibey) Island and Lale Island are a must-visit with their pristine beaches and ancient sites with a rich and interesting history.
As this is a coastal town it is of course known for its fresh seafood dishes. You can sample the tasty local cuisine at one of the seaside restaurants where you’ll be able to gorge on grilled octopus, shrimp, calamari, and a range of seafood appetisers.
Because the town is relatively unknown to foreigners, this is the perfect place to visit if you want to get away from busy life. You won’t find swarms of tourists here, especially as we’re now entering Autumn.
The average temperature in Ayvalik during September is a whopping 29 degrees Celsius, so you’ll be able to have a wonderful summer holiday without having to go away in peak season.
