Bryson DeChambeau has joined the fight to save Dalmuir.
The reigning U.S. Open champion has urged the local authority that operates the course on the outskirts of Glasgow to remain open.
Members have been told there is a 99 per cent chance it will close.
Although it could be reduced to 12 holes or remain at 18 with a rise in membership fees.
Dalmuir’s future will debated at a budget meeting next Wednesday.
The course was under threat of closing last year and is once again at risk after being included on West Dunbartonshire Council’s list of saving options.
An online petition was created to save the course and has received more than 3500 signatures thus far.
Martin Kaymer’s caddie, Craig Connelly, previously signed the petition.
And he managed to film a video featuring DeChambeau offering his support.
“Sometimes people don’t realise the impact of what golf can be and what it is for a community whether it’s character development, personal growth, learning about yourself or family development,” DeChambeau said.
“I think it’s important for people to understand that if you don’t have golf courses like Dalmuir, and a community like Dalmuir, it’s difficult to continue to grow not only just a sport but a community.
“This golf course is super important. I know it’s super important, and I hope that people can understand how important it is for your community to go out and sign that petition.
“Keep this golf course alive, keep it in existence. It’s so important for everybody’s sake.
“Not just to sell whatever it is you guys sell, but to create an amazing community that you can grow, work around and come together to make a different future for generations to come.”
Campaigner Gerry Smith told GlasgowLive that he is ‘not confident’ that Dalmuir can be saved and will look at the possibility of a community asset transfer – a process where a community can take ownership or management of public land or buildings.
Another Dalmuir member added: “I have been here since I was ten years old and have seen the course go downhill.
“The council wants the course to be profitable but they haven’t updated the website since 2013 and the information is out of date.
“We are disappointed and disheartened. The council’s budget targets the same areas every year. This place could make money if run properly.
“We worry that it will turn into a wasteland if it gets shut down.”
A spokesperson for West Dunbartonshire Council said: “This is one of a number of options being considered as part of work to close a budget gap of at least £7.7million.
“No decision can or will be taken until the meeting on Wednesday 5 March.”
