Going on holiday is already expensive enough as it is but many Brits don’t realise the extra added costs they could avoid to save some extra money when jetting off.

With New Years approaching, many Brits are looking to escape out of the UK at an affordable price with an 18% increase in Google searches for ‘cheap flights’, say experts at Arriva.

But with many being stung by high airport fees, it can be a struggle to keep travel costs down.

Arriva conducted a new study revealing the most cost-effective ways to travel from the five biggest airports in the UK and its findings could help you save some money.

The study found Manchester airport charges the highest drop-off fee at £25 for the shortest time 10 minutes.

It also concluded that Heathrow airport has the most affordable drop-off fee with a single payment of £5.

Arriva says a third of Brits forget to include travel costs when budgeting for a holiday.

For a more affordable way of travelling to and from the airport, coach service is the most affordable transportation method with prices as little as £2.

But the experts say Brits should also take into account the possibility of train travel to the airport being cancelled which could incur extra costs.

It found Manchester airport had the most train cancellations with 626 around Christmas in 2023.

Not only this but travelling from 5pm to 9pm to the airport was found to be the worst time to travel with 245 cancellations.

Over half of Brits admitted to suffering from travel nerves so making sure your experience is as stress-free as possible is an important factor in having a good start to your trip.

Having to pay extra unexpected costs can mean added stress to your trip if you’re already on a budget.

Airport parking costs have increased over the years with The Telegraph reporting that parking fees had gone up by a huge 260% in 2023.

To ensure you don’t incur an extra cost make sure to check for the most affordable way to get to the airport and take options such as buses if you can which are likely to be cheaper.
