A Bauhaus home in the U.K. with a pool, a tennis court and an architectural pedigree has hit the market for £6.25 million (US$7.78 million). 

Known as Miramonte, the home is the work of modernist architect Maxwell Fry and was built between 1936 and 1937—reportedly at the peak of his creativity.

Maxwell was one of the few British modernist architects working in the U.K. in the ’30s, and had a partnership with Walter Gropius, the father of the Bauhaus movement and whom Fry helped to flee Nazi Germany with a ruse that Gropius and his family were attending a film festival in Italy.   

“Miramonte is a superb example of Bauhaus architecture,” said Tom Shuttleworth, senior associate director at Strutt & Parker, which brought the home to the market at the end of March. “Particularly at this size and in such an exclusive location—it really is a one off.”

The six-bedroom house is located on the private and exclusive Coombe House Estate, a highly sought-after enclave of South West London. 

A terrazzo-tiled entrance hall leads into the light-filled home and on to a drawing room with sliding windows, Australian walnut flooring and a fireplace with a marble surround. 

The heart of the main floor is the kitchen, breakfast and family room; and there’s also a partially-glazed sunroom; a study that still has its original wood-clad walls; a library lined with shelving; a dining room; a media room; and a wine cellar with recessed concrete bottle holders.

Elsewhere in the home is an indoor swimming pool complex, complete with a hot tub, changing facilities, and a glass stairwell that leads down to another wellness area with a steam room and sauna. A sun terrace and multiple balconies can be found across the property, including one attached to the primary bedroom suite. 

Elsewhere on the property, there’s a tennis court, a tennis pavilion with a kitchenette, and a detached two-car garage with a one-bedroom flat above it. 

“The house has all one could wish for,” Shuttleworth said. “From the pool to the tennis court, sauna and steam room. The likely buyer will be somebody who falls in love with the architecture and appreciates its rarity in today’s market.”

The owner, who couldn’t be reached for comment, “has lived here since 2001,” Shuttleworth added. “So there’s unlikely to be another Miramonte for a number of years.”
