With beginnings in the United States, Black Friday is traditionally the day following Thanksgiving. Marking the start of the Christmas period, it’s also the busiest shopping day of the year, when retailers discount prices in a hope to boost sales before the end of the year.
There are a few different stories floating around regarding the origins of the term Black Friday. Some believe it to refer to the fact that businesses’ books would be ‘in the black’ following a major sales weekend, while others believe it refers to the disastrous occurrences when almost everyone called in sick to work the day after Thanksgiving.
Black Friday always falls on the last Friday of November which, in 2024, is the 29th.
How long is a piece of string? Traditionally, Black Friday is November 29, but many retailers start the party early these days – some as early as November 1 – and most continue on to Cyber Monday, which this year is December 2.
