Greece’s beautiful islands are a popular holiday destination for a reason. From breathtaking coves to fresh olives and picture-perfect villages – they have all the ideal holiday ingredients.
But which is the country’s best island?
A survey from the experts at Which? Travel asked holidaymakers to rank Greek islands based on several important factors.
Kefalonia, an island to the west of Greece’s mainland, was crowned the country’s best island by British tourists.
The beautiful island scored five stars for scenery, beaches and, peace and quiet, making it a fantastic choice for a Mamma Mia-style holiday.
Kefalonia is the biggest Ionian island and has some incredibly beautiful beaches backed by rocky cliffs. But it’s not just about the beach.
A Which? spokesperson said: “While the cliffy coastline is spectacular, its interior – lush with vineyards, citrus groves and forests of cypress – also begs to be explored.”
Venture inland to explore vineyards, marvel at Mount Ainos or enjoy the island’s famous sweets made with quince puree.
In good news for British tourists, Which? also found that Kefalonia was one of Greece’s cheapest island destinations.
It was the fifth cheapest island in the research with a week’s package holiday coming to £956 per person.
If you’re looking for a cheaper option, check out Kalymnos which was crowned the best-value Greek island.
Kefalonia has one airport which is located close to the island’s capital, Argostoli. Britons can fly direct from several of the UK’s major airports including London Stansted and Manchester.
The flight takes around three and a half hours from the UK and easyJet and TUI both offer direct flights.
Stay in the capital Argostoli for easy access to bars and restaurants or choose Lixouri for proximity to vineyards.
If you’re looking for authentic Greek village-style living, you can check out options in Agia Efimia.
