Alberobello, or ‘the land of dwarf houses’, is a small town in Southern Italy, and has long been hailed as one of the most beautiful villages in the country.
In a thread posted on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), the user listed this Italian town under ‘the most surreal villages on Earth,’ and said: “Famous for its unique trullo buildings, wandering through the cobbled streets of this Apulian marvel feels like stepping into a fairytale.”
A ‘trullo’ is a traditional dry-stone hut with a conical roof, unique to the Puglia region of Italy. Known for their whitewashed walls and clustered in distinctly small sizes, ‘trulli’ houses look straight out of a fantasy novel.
A widely popular compliment to the town, a user, this time on Tripadvisor said: “This is a Fairytale town. Magical. It is probably the most unique UNESCO World Heritage Site we have ever visited. The whitewashed round buildings with their stone roofs make for beautiful photos against the deep blue sky.”
While another user agreed, saying: “Alberobello is as close to a fairy-tale village as you will ever find.”
The two main areas Rione Monti and Rione Aia Piccola are a must-visit to explore the trulli houses, as well as the Territory Museum, to get a glimpse into the regional history and culture.
Alberobello makes for an ideal day trip, as the small town can be covered in two to three hours, but it is indeed quite an experience to soak in the vernacular architecture and slow life by staying back for a day or two.
The Trulli Holiday Albergo Diffuso comes highly recommended, for those looking to soak in the magic of the town to the fullest, as it combines ancient charm with modern facilities.
Keeping up with the favourite allusion, one Tripadvisor user raved about the stay, saying: “Loved this charming town and the fairytale-like accommodations. The trulli guest houses were all restored recently. They are roomy and delightful – I wish we could have stayed longer.”
